Pollutant Emissions Reporting and Performance Considerations for Hydrogen–Hydrocarbon Fuels in Gas Turbines

Abstract Hydrogen (H2) fuel for gas turbines is a promising approach long duration storage and dispatchable utilization of intermittent renewable power. A major global discussion point, however, the potential air quality impact hydrogen combustion associated with nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions. Indeed, several studies in literature have reported elevated NOX concentrations terms dry ppmv at 15% oxygen (O2) as fuel's H2 fraction increased. Yet, emphasized this work, practice directly comparing emissions based on reference O2 concentration (ppmvdr) inappropriate across hydrocarbon blends due to differing changes induced by drying referencing corresponding exhaust gasses. This paper addresses three distinct approaches consistently blends. Furthermore, it presents examples that quantify differences apparent pollutant between each usual ppmvdr reporting full range hydrogen–methane mixture ratios. In all considered approaches, values are shown be inflated relative fuels, making them unsuitable direct comparisons among conventional alternative fuels.
